by Nick Swanson

Having problems with the penis will not only affect a man’s sexual performance, but also his fertility and general health. Knowing the different penis disorders will empower you with the knowledge on how to avoid them and seek the best treatment options available.

Some of the most common penis disorders include the following :

Penis Disorders

  • Priaprism
  • Peyronie’s disease
  • Balanitis
  • Penile cancer

Priaprism is a condition wherein the penis stays erect for more than four hours. The erection may be accompanied by pain and extreme rigidity. It is considered a medical emergency and should be given medical attention right away. If this happens to you, go to the emergency room immediately.

Some of the causes of priaprism are abuse of alcohol and drugs. It can also be brought about by the use of certain antidepressants and blood pressure medication. It can also occur due to administration of anesthesia, or as a complication from medical conditions such as leukemia, problems in the spinal cord or as a result of genital injuries

Priaprism can be treated by draining the blood out of the penis using a syringe or by administering medication that will help shrink the blood vessels.

Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s disease occurs when there’s an occurrence of lumps, called plague, around the penis. It often begins as a swelling and form into lumps over a period of time.

This penis disorder can be acquired if there’s inflammation of the lymphatic nerves, leading to the scarring of tissues. It can also be an acquired trait or genetically transferred from a family member.

Most doctors prefer waiting for a year or two and allow the scars to disappear on their own. Surgeries can be conducted if the case is severe or curvatures are extreme that it inhibits them from performing sexual intercourse.

Balanitis occurs when there’s inflammation of the foreskin of the penis. It is more common to men who are uncircumcised as the presence of foreskin makes a good breeding ground for bacteria, sweat and dead skin.

Hygiene is the first defense towards balanitis. It can also be addressed by using antibacterial products, and in some cases, circumcision may be advised.

Penile Cancer

Penile cancer is a condition when abnormal cells in the penis spread throughout the organ uncontrollably. The exact causes of penile cancer has not been properly identified, however, risk factors are high for people who are uncircumcised, infected with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), those who smoke, and are more than 68 years old.

Treatments for penile cancers depend on the severity of the condition. Incision, circumcision and microsurgery can be performed. For cases that are so severe, part or the whole penis may also be removed surgically.

Being on the watch of the different penis disorders will help prevent a disaster from devastating your sex life. It is best to consult a doctor right away once symptoms are observed to avoid the condition from worsening. Furthermore, since some of these disorders are complications of other medical issues, it is advisable to live a healthy lifestyle to prevent such medical issues.
