Topical Creams for Testosterone levels

by Cheryl Powers

Low testosterone levels can affect all men, but in particular men in their 40s and 50’s. It is during this time that production of the male sex hormone testosterone decreases, leading to a number of unpleasant and definitely undesirable symptoms. Most men will notice a loss of body hair, a depressed mood, weight gain and excessive sweating, particularly at night. One of the most distressing is a reduction in their libido – decreasing their sex drive – and even erectile dysfunction.

Testosterone levels

Because this is so common among men in this age group, there are a number of treatments, both prescription and over-the-counter, at their disposal. Most well-known are medications such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis, all of which must be prescribed by a physician. In fact, it is important for the patient to consult with their G.P. before embarking on a course of this type of treatment just to ensure that their symptoms are not due to any other type of illness. The doctor should check for signs of heart disease, diabetes and prostate disease. One particularly important test is a PSA test (Prostate Specific Antigen), which, if protein levels are higher, may indicate the presence of prostate cancer. The doctor may also check the testicles for abnormalities and the patient’s overall state of well-being.

If lowered levels of testosterone do appear to be the problem, and a prescription medication is not a desirable option, the male may want to consider a topical testosterone cream such as Androgel, Containing 1% testosterone, this cream is applied not to the genital area but to the abdomen at a dose of 5gm daily. Of course a topical cream is not likely to have such quick results as other methods of treatment but the advantage is that it is safe for use by men with certain health conditions, including the aforementioned heart disease, stroke and prostate cancer. However, they should also be aware of the following side effects that can occur such as skin acne, sleep apnea and breast enlargement (gynecomastia).

After using a testosterone cream for approximately 2 weeks the male should notice some definite improvements in a number of areas, including a boost in energy and sexual libido, an ability to perform sexually and a general increase in the quality of life.
